So . . . last week I took a 3-day painting workshop in Carmel from Patti Mollica, a wonderful New York artist. The name of the workshop was "Painting Fast, Loose and Bold" if that gives you an idea. We did lots of exercises to loosen up - not sure I got any bolder.
One exercise we did was to paint a painting in 30 strokes or less with a big brush! You really have to load up your brush with lots of paint and really cover as much of the canvas as you can. You can see I did one stroke at the end around the 2 flowers. This was about 29 strokes.
Another exercise we did was to paint the same object/set up four times . . . and fairly quickly. The theory is that as you become more familiar with your subject matter, each painting should improve from the previous one. Here is a tea cup series I did.
